Spillovers: Notes on a Phenomenological Ecology
– Cesare Biasini Selvaggi
English
Toothpicks, beer bottle caps, concrete, and sandpaper become, in Chris Soal’s hands, visual organisms that transcend their original function, evoking cellular proliferations, geological stratifications, and new architectures of the living. Each of the artist’s works results from an act of accumulation and layering, through which matter generates new possibilities of itself, transforming into unexpected entities along the thread of a research and poetics that go beyond mere reuse. His practice moves toward a reflection on biological transformation and the interconnection of systems, staging a perceptual ecology that concerns life itself.
The exhibition invites the viewer into Chris Soal’s creative process, which unfolds through the concept of spillover—a term that describes the phenomenon of “overflowing.” The materials overflow, surpassing their original function and becoming something else. Perception overflows, called to transcend categories and boundaries. The imagination overflows, shifting from the inorganic toward the biological, evoking proliferating cellular forms, geological layers accumulated over time, and organisms multiplying through space.
Italiano
